Research and exploration focuses on interactions between geophysical variables that affect risk assessment, risk preparedness, and contingency planning. A global expert in volcanology, geomorphology, sediment transport, and environmental impact assessment, my work worldwide on these issues has produced greater than 100 research papers and technical reports. My current research is on glaciovolcanic processes affected by climate change, and the ability of large magnitude earthquakes to trigger volcanic eruptions.
Environmental catastrophes and our preparation and response to them constrain the ability of human society to pursue steady economic progress. There remains a gulf between our scientific knowledge and our ability to communicate environmental risks. My work seeks to bring scientific knowledge to the public and to policy-makers. I have pioneered the use of environmental risk registers to communicate the hazards, their probability of occurrence, the consequence, thus providing a quantitative prioritization of the risk. In the Andes my work is conducted in cooperation with the Chilean search and rescue organization Cruz del Sur.
I conduct water demand studies, develop conservation strategies, and conduct hydrologic studies to develop Water Security Plans. I balance factors such as chemical contamination, ecosystem alterations, climate change effects, energy demand, and physical hazards in evaluating both supply, demand, and use patterns. My water security work has been in California and at an orphanage in South Africa.
I have well-developed skills in framing and analyzing environmental issues, and in communicating complex ideas to a wide range of audiences. I have been noted in references for the creativity of my approaches in working with the environmental aspects of energy and water. I manage projects for Federal, State, and Local government regulatory agencies, and for project applicants. I am an expert in analysis of energy, water, land use, and natural resources management. My environmental analysis work is is conducted with the enviornmental consultancy ENVIRON International Corporation
